Chisos Basin Construction Canceled: What It Means for Your Big Bend Trip

Chisos Basin Construction Canceled: What It Means for Your Big Bend Trip

Big Bend National Park has released a major update regarding the planned construction project in the Chisos Basin! The project's outcome is quite different than originally expected.

The Original Plan

In 2019, the National Park Service approved a large-scale project to rebuild the Chisos Mountains Lodge and upgrade infrastructure throughout the Basin. The project had varying timelines with the most recent scheduled to begin in 2026, and would have required extended closures of the Basin area, including:

• Chisos Basin Road
• Chisos Basin Campground
• Chisos Mountains Lodge and restaurant
• Visitor center and retail store
• Popular trails like Lost Mine and The Window

This raised concerns for many travelers planning trips to Big Bend and the confusing messaging did not help matters.

What Has Changed

The National Park Service has now confirmed that the full construction project will not move forward as planned.

Key reasons according to the NPS:
• Construction costs have increased significantly since 2019
• Project delays created additional complications
• Available funding is no longer enough to complete the full scope

Because of this, the lodge rebuild and large-scale Basin improvements are not moving forward at this time. This is great news for those wanting to enjoy the majesty of the Chisos Basin!

What Is Moving Forward

The park is shifting focus to a more targeted priority:

• Rehabilitation of the Chisos Basin water system

This work is expected to move forward through a separate contract, though an exact timeline has not yet been announced.

The National Park Service has also stated they are continuing to evaluate options for future improvements to the lodge and Basin facilities.

What This Means for Visitors

This update brings some clarity for anyone planning a trip to Big Bend:

• The Chisos Basin remains open
• No long-term closures are currently planned
• Lodging, camping, trails, and visitor access continue as normal

The previously expected multi-year shutdown of the Basin is no longer happening.
